JPEG file comment | GREUZE, Jean-Baptiste
(b. 1725, Tournus, d. 1805, Paris) A Student 1757 Oil on canvas National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh Back in Paris from Italy, Greuze seems to have come close temporarily to Chardin's handling of paint - seldom closer than in the fine Student (Écolier qui étudie sa leçon), which has the unforced sobriety of his best male portraits.
