DescriptionUSS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in Baie de Grand Goave Haiti 21 Jan 1010.jpg | The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) operating in the Baie de Grand Goave off Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 21 January 2010. Carl Vinson was supporting “Operation Unified Response” along with the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD-5), the amphibious dock landing ships USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43), USS Gunston Hall (LSD-44) and USS Carter Hall (LSD-50). The ships were providing military support capabilities to civil authorities to help stabilize and improve the situation in Haiti in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on 12 January 2010. The embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17) consisted mainly of six helicopter squadrons for this purpose, plus an airborne early warning squadron and a fleet logistics squadron. | |||
