Since the snowstorm of 2 February I've had a number of complaints from residents who have been unable to get firm information about when their wheelie bins and recycling boxes would be collected. None of them are being unreasonable. Without exception they accept that London's heaviest snow for eighteen years would completely mess-up normal waste collection arrangements. They know a lot of roads were impassable by the refuse trucks. They guessed that many staff couldn't get to work; or were out gritting streets.

So far, so understandable.

But while sympathetic about the impact of the problem, they criticise the speed of recovery from the problem. They view it as slow and apparently disorganised; with little or no accurate and timely information widely available. They told me - and I agree - that they think Haringey and Haringey Enterprise should have 'bounced back' far more quickly and efficiently.

Some people complained the Call Centre couldn't give them reliable information about changed collection days; nor when recycling boxes would be collected. I know there was information posted on the website. Fine, if someone has an Internet connection. And it would have been helpful for councillors to be told the webpage was up. (I found out from Harringay Online community website.)

People say that as a result, wheeled bins were left out on pavements. And that many streets had - maybe still have - even a lot more dumping than usual.

It seems likely that in future we're more likely to get 'extreme weather events'. So can we try to learn something and be better prepared next time?
