Title
?IA potin from Belgic Gaul
Description
English: Cast tin-bronze coin, about 20mm in diameter, with a flange of about 2mm on both sides. At the thickest point it measures about 3mm. It weighs 6.05g.
The reverse shows an animal (a dog? or horse?) with a pellet between its legs and another in front of its chest. If the animal is a horse it is crudely represented with a very short neck and legs.
The obverse is very worn, but seems to be decorated with a central pellet and at least four more. There are several faint lines suggesting that it may be subdivided into ?six or more sections.
The coin is most similar to a type of cast tin-bronze potin from Belgic Gaul (cf BMC III, Catalogue of Celtic Coins in the British Museum vol. III Bronze Coins of Gaul, no 557). These types of potins have variously been attributed to the Nervii and Aduatuci, both peoples thought to have inhabited the area between the Rhine and the Meuse (i.e. South East Belgium and North-east France).
About a dozen examples of this type have been recorded in Britain, mostly from Kent. This is certainly the most westerly find of this kind.
The design shows a striking similarity to earlier bronze coins struck in central Italy. These third century coins are about 5 times as large, weighing about 40g. The similarity suggests that these may have formed the design inspiration for the later potins.
