After the İstanbul Darülfünun was converted to İstanbul University, following the University Reform on May 31, 1933, the faculties of Science and Literature began to educate their pupils from a new perspective. Initially the faculties’ institutions were located in several places including Sultanahmet, Çemberlitaş, Galatasaray and also Zeynep Hanım Mansion in Beyazıt. After one of these mansions burned down, a new building, designed collaboratively by Emin Onat and Sedad Hakkı Eldem, was built as one monumental structure comprising inner courtyards surrounded by rectangular blocks. Completed in 1952, this singular entity reflected the giant massive morphology of German Nazi Architecture, as was the trend of the day. On the other hand characteristics of civil Ottoman architecture could be seen in the building’s window rhythms, plans and in details like canopies. Today the building continues to be used by the İstanbul University faculties of Science and Literature.
