The common shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) is a big, colourful duck, bigger than a mallard but smaller than a goose. At a distance can look black and white, but head and neck is a glossy green-black and has prominent chestnut breast band. It is widespread and common in Eurasia. On the beach often duck feeding at low tide, when the water is receding exposes muddy bottom. Shelduck literally "mow" the muddy silt - cranes and turning it to the right and to the left, passing through the beak of all the dirt. The maximum water depth in which common shelduck successfully find food, is 40 centimeters , at this depth common shelduck dive with her entire upper body in the water. Swim well, but only a small dive. Fly well and the flight is silent. She often nest in the rabbit and fox burrows. In a study of partner loyalty among birds common shelducks reported one of the lowest separation rates. Only 2.4 percent of the existing couple separated a year. One of the most attractive of common shelduck is renowned for its spectacular moult gatherings along the northern coast of Germany. These concentrations are often enormous, the most famous one is the German Waddenzee reaching over 100,000 birds and including most of the north-west European population: Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Scandinavia, north Germany, north Poland and the Baltic States. The Waddenzee consists of many square miles of gently shelving sand and mudbanks largely covered at high water. All shelduck except those bred during the year need to renew wing and tail feathers simultaneously. For about four weeks they are unable to fly at all. The stock of common shelduck s went particularly towards the end of the 19th century sharply. Now they are protected all year in most northern and central European countries. This bird is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies. There are very small count of common shelducks in Bulgaria, 35-60 pairs nest, total number at the Southern Black Sea coast showed an average of 2081 and a maximum of 4224. The bird is included in the Red Book of nature protection with the status of "vulnerable (VU)». |
