Notes Part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. Attributed to Muller. See Julien Flety, Dictionnaire des reliures francais ayant exerce de 1800 a nos jours, 1988. Macchi states; c. 1840, Paris, attributed to Muller. A similar example is to be seen on Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Relieurs et reliures, 1995, p. 364-365, n. 174, pl. XXII. He was associated with J. Hering between 1830 and 1834, rue Coquenard 18, then 24. At this last address, Muller (without "F") is shown in the Almanach du Commerce of 1835. In the mean time, in 1834 Joseph Thouvenin aîné died; Muller bought the atelier tools and signed R. E. (ELIÉ PAR?) MULLER SUC.(cesseur de) THOUVENIN. His participation at the 1834 exhibition was rewarded with a bronze medal. He died on august 30 th 1836. The workshop was bought by Jean-Edouard Niedrée who married Muller's widow. Muller's signature as Thouvenin's successor appears on French Restoration panel-stamp decorated bindings. The same signature is to be found on several examples concerning Tableaux pittoresques de l'Inde adorned with a à l'indienne panel-stamp, tooled on paper, silk or velvet. See H. Béraldi, La reliure, II, p. 1, 27, 30; Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Relieurs et reliures, 1995, p. 364-365, n. 174, p. 529; J. Fléty, Dictionnaire, p. 133-134; C. Ramsden, French bookbinders, p. 144-145).
