Title
1: 18th or 19th century Russian bag seal
Description
English: A lead alloy Russian bale seal dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The seal is circular with a hole for the cord running from side to side. On the obverse is: "[SP](B) / A [-] H / 18[-]6[-]". SPB stands for St Petersburg, the place of export probably, the next row is codified data about the producer, the then the date. 2 stars are also visible. The other side has: "П Д / [...] / [...] / [...]". These probably indicated the rank and name of the quality control officer and a reference number. The seal was stamped somewhat off centre, so the last line is mostly missing. It has a diameter of 20.85mm, thickness 5.18mm, weight 11.39g. Seals like these were used to monitor the quality of flax and hemp originating in Russia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Die axis 6o'clock.
