Summary[edit]

Description

Thanks to the hard work of satellite engineers, researchers and our partners, #SinceKatrina, NOAA has made significant progress over the past decade in detecting hurricanes as they form, predicting their paths, and tracking their intensity. Since the 2005 hurricane season, which included Katrina, we’ve launched five new satellites that provide forecasters with more timely and accurate data, which in turn has given communities and businesses more lead time than ever before.

And get ready - next year, we’re launching the first of a new series of satellites that will scan the Earth five times faster at four times image resolution, and triple the number of channels scientists can tap into to observe global weather and climate. Positioned above North America, GOES-R will deliver an astonishing 3.5 terabytes of data per day and ensure America has a National Weather Service second to none.
