Title |
1255 Medieval knife blade.JPG |
||
Description |
English: Forged iron knife, length 72mm, width 13mm, thickness 5mm, weight 6.45g. Remains of the rectangular cross section tang 27mm long. The back is approximately 3mm wide across the its length, the tip is missing. The knife is heavily corroded with blistering over the whole of the surface. Nonetheless, the original shape of the knife is still visible
Knifes with tangs has been found in excavations in Jorvic and London dating to 9th-14th century, after which this type of handle mounting was largely superseded by riveting it into place. However, the shape of the blade would suggest a 12th-14th century is most likely. |
