Title |
14th century seal matrix |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy seal matrix of probable 14th century AD date. The object is in good condition, with little wear or corrosion. The seal die is circular and measures 19.3mm in diameter. It has a central image showing a seated lamb (facing left when printed) with a cross extending from its back into the outer legend. The legend is set within a border and reads "ECCE AGNVS DEI" ("Behold the Lamb of God"). The handle tapers upwards from the reverse of the die. It has six sides and a decorative terminal consisting of a small flattened section with a central circular hole and moulded outer edge. This is separated from the rest of the handle by three transverse ribs. The seal measures 24mm high and weighs 11.64g. |
