Title |
15th century chafing dish handle |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy 15th/ 16th century chafing dish handle and lug. It is 60mm wide and 50mm long (including lug 64mm). It is slightly curving in profile. The 'underside' is covered in tooling marks. Most of the patina is smooth and shiny and dark green, though missing in patches. The wider, non-lug end is heart shaped and rectangular in section (max 5x4mm), extending not to a point but an axis 25mm long and circular in section (diameter 6mm). The lug is of a different metal, lighter green and without a shiny patina. It is mostly circular with a rectangular projetcion in the end of which is a copper alloy rivet 6mm in diameter. The lug is 21mm long with a diameter of 15mm (internal diameter 9mm). The chafing dish would have held hot coals. Its purpose was to keep other dishes warm. |
