Title
17; Medieval buckle
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy, oval-shaped buckle with recessed strap bar, probably dating from the 12th or early 13th century. The outer loop is not flat, but slopes outwards, so that the diameter of the base of the buckle is greater than that of the upper edge. The sloping face of the loop is decorated with two transverse grooves, one at the top and one at the bottom, between which is a design which is now illegible. The whole buckle, including the strap bar, shows signs of gilding. The pin is missing. Areas where the gilt is missing show a light green patina. It is 13.9mm long, 16.6mm wide and 6.5mm thick. It weighs 1.32gm. Similar but finer examples on the PAS database are NMS-9BBAE2, NMS-559B82 and NMS-2407F3.
