Title

18th-19th Century zoomorphic supporting leg from a vessel

Illustrated By: Dom Andrews
Description
English: This artefact could have been part of a supporting leg from a bronze vessel. The object is a zoomorphic creature, which appears to be part boar (it has tusks), part dog or other large mammal and part seal (its feet appear to be flipper like). The object is 45mm in height, when stood flat on a table with its 'flippers' square to the surface. The creatures 'arms' stick out at an angel greater than 120 degrees, suggesting that this creature (along with perhaps three or four others) supported a bronze vessel. Attached to the side of the 'arms' there is a floral decoration. Both the 'arms' and the floral decoration have been broken suggesting that they were once attached to a larger vessel.
