Summary

[edit]
Description

Designed by Romanian pioneer Trajan Vuia, the Vuia 1 became one of the first heavy-than-air flying machines to leave the ground under its own power when it first flew in March 1906. The engine was powered by carbonic acid heated in a boiler, which sounds pretty heavy for an aero-engine! Nicknamed the ‘Liliacul’ (Romanian for ‘Bat’) it managed several hops, the longest of which was 39ft in length. A modified design, the Vuia 1-bis, later managed a 79ft hop. It is believed that the Vuia designs directly influenced Santos-Dumont towards using wheeled undercarriage for his own machines. The original Vuia 1 was donated to the museum here in 1925 by Trajan Vuia himself and is on display in the Pioneers Hall. Musée de l'air et de l'espace. Le Bourget Airport, Paris, France.
