| Description |
Designed by Romanian pioneer Trajan Vuia, the Vuia 1 became one of the first heavy-than-air flying machines to leave the ground under its own power when it first flew in March 1906. The engine was powered by carbonic acid heated in a boiler, which sounds pretty heavy for an aero-engine! Nicknamed the ‘Liliacul’ (Romanian for ‘Bat’) it managed several hops, the longest of which was 39ft in length. A modified design, the Vuia 1-bis, later managed a 79ft hop. It is believed that the Vuia designs directly influenced Santos-Dumont towards using wheeled undercarriage for his own machines. The original Vuia 1 was donated to the museum here in 1925 by Trajan Vuia himself and is on display in the Pioneers Hall. Musée de l'air et de l'espace.
