| Description |
English: Hess Brothers Department Store as it looked in 1930. It shows the building before Max Hess gave it an Art Moderne Facade.
The section with the cupola began in 1885 as the Grand Central Hotel, which had the only bowling alley in the city at the time. The third floor included Barner's Hall, named for local hotel owner Victor Barner. The Knights of the Mystic Chain fraternal group used it as a meeting place. In 1897 Max Hess, Sr. and his brother Charles occupied 831-833 Hamilton. By 1901, the Hess Brothers owned the hotel. By 1913, the store occupied the former city horse car stables and Albert J. Ziegler's carpet, oil cloth, wood andf willoware business up to the corner of Ninth and Hamilton. The building at the rear left is the Hess Brothers Annex, added in the 1920s. |
