Description

The UK built Ford Escort replaced the Anglia in 1968, it was the small car in the UK Ford range. It featured the coke bottle waistline and dog bone shaped grille. The Mk I Escort was built until 1974, replaced by the boxier Mk II. It was available in 2 or 4 door saloon, 3 door estate and van. The base model, the Deluxe got round headlights and rubber flooring, the upmarket Super got rectangular headlights and carpet, 1300E got a wood trim dash, the GT, extra instrumentation, Weber carb and uprated suspension. Other performance models built at the Aveley Plant were, Twin Cam, Mexico, RS1600 and RS2000. Engines; 1100, 1300, also 1600, 2000 in performance models

In 1970, Hannau Mikkola won the London to Mexico World Cup Rally in a RS1600 Twin Cam Escort, so Ford produced a tamed down version for the public in their honour, called the Escort Mexico, built from 1970-75, it didn't get the expensive twin cam engine of the RS1600, just the standard 1600 crossflow.
