The Lincoln Motor Company was originally founded in 1917 and since 1922 has been the luxury vehicle division of the American Ford Motor Company. The fifth generation Continental was built from 1970-79. The Continental received a ground-up redesign for the first time since 1961, now sharing the chassis with the Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis. The suicide doors were replaced by conventional front-hinged doors. and now with hideaway headlamps. Available as a 2 door Coupe, a 4 door pillared Hardtop and Town Car (with vinyl top), slotted chrome and black grille. 1975 saw a major facelift, the rear roofline had a more upright design. Coupes, now pillared with a square opera window in the C-pillar, Town Cars got oval opera windows. 1975, grille vertical bars, divided into 6 sections 1976, no changes. 1977, a Rolls Royce style waterfall grille was introduced 1978, the rear fender skirt showed more of the wheel Also available was the Thunderbird based Mark Series 2 door Coupe, they got the Rolls Royce style waterfall grille and hideaway headlights; 1968 Mk III, 1972 Mk IV, 1977 Mk V, 1980 Mk VI Engines; 166hp 400 cu in Cleveland or 208hp 460 cu in Lima V8s |
