| Description |
The Land Rover Series I, II, and III (commonly referred to as 'Series' Land Rovers, to distinguish them from later models) were four wheel drive off-road vehicles produced by the British manufacturer Rover. The Rover Company Limited produced automobiles from 1901-67, when they were taken over by Leyland Motors, became British Leyland in 1978 and the Rover Group in 1986 The Series I was built from 1948-57, flat sided, In 1950, the lights moved from a position behind the grille to protruding through the grille. The station wagon introduced in 1956 The Series II from 1958-70, it got barrelled sides to cover the vehicles wider track. In 1969 with the Series IIA, the headlights were moved into the wings The 1971-85 Series III got a new plastic grille replacing earlier metal ones, new trim options were introduced to make the interior more comfortable. The 1982 County Station Wagon got cloth seats, soundproofing etc. The Series III was available in 2 door 88 inch wheelbase or 4 door 109 inch wheelbase and pickup. From 1979-85, the Stage 1 was built using some of the same components as the Range Rover, such as a detuned version of the 3500cc Rover V8 engine (91hp, down from 135) and permanent 4WD |
