| Description |
The 1980-86 Mk III Escort was new from the Ground up, the biggest changes being the adoption of front-wheel drive, independent suspension, new hatchback body and 1300 and 1600 OHC engines. Unique to the Mk III was the black louvred grille and straked rear lamp clusters, as well as introducing the aerodynamic 'bustle-back' bootlid stump. Models were base, L , GL, Ghia, XR3, RS 1600i and RS Turbo. The 1986-90 Mk IV Escort was not much more than a facelift, a smooth style nose and smoothed over rear tail lights, internally the car had a revised dashboard. The Mk IV was available in 3 and 5 door Hatchback or Estate, 2 door Cabriolet and 3 door Van. Models were base, L, LX, GL, Ghia, Sport, XR3i and RS Turbo Engines; 60hp 1300, 73hp 1400i, 90hp 1600, 132hp 1600 Turbo The 2 door Hatchback XR3i was preceded by the 1981-1982 1600cc carburetted 96bhp XR3 (Mk III) The Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system was introduced in Oct 1982, the XR3i producing 105hp. The Mk IV XR3i was slightly heavier, so slightly slower. The 1992-93 Mk V was heavier again, but now 130hp brought performance back up. |
