On 27th and 28th December 2015 the line between London Paddington and Slough was closed due to engineering work, meaning that many Great Western Railway services were being diverted via alternative routes. Services from south Wales were running to London Marylebone via Swindon, Oxford and Banbury, whilst trains from Bristol and the south west of England were using Waterloo. Diversions to London Waterloo – and to Paddington via Banbury have happened on a number of occasions previously, but this was the first time that trains have run from south Wales to London Marylebone. The 1Z12 0800 Cardiff Central to London Marylebone (27th December) was therefore the first ever direct scheduled passenger service from Cardiff to Marylebone. Here the train is seen at Cardiff Central having just arrived from Landore Depot in Swansea. GWR power car 43189 is leading, with 43168 on the rear of the train. After calling at Newport, Bristol Parkway and Swindon the train will make stops at Oxford and Banbury (with a reversal there) before running over the Chiltern mainline to Marylebone. Full credit to GWR and Network Rail for keeping a pretty regular service running to/from London - presumably an operation which has necessitated much planning and organisation. |
