Title
2: Medieval ceramic jug shard
Description
English: A medieval rim fragment from a ceramic vessel. The sherd is 60mm long, 54.5mm wide and 21.9mm thick. It weighs 68.7g. The sherd has a rounded rim and a pronounced shoulder, probably the top of a handle, but maybe part of a decorative flange. The fabric is dark grey on the surface with a purple core in the wall and a brownish red in the handle. It has fairly sparse light coloured slightly rounded glassy inclusions (quartzite?) with good sorting, occasional white, softer pieces (shell or limestone?) and very occasional large dark angular hard pieces (rock or hard grog?). It is hard and the texture is fine. This is probably part of a medieval pot in the Northern gritty ware tradition. The radius of the rim is approximately 60mm.
