Summary[edit]

Description

May 2015 saw the introduction of locomotive worked passenger trains on the Cumbrian Coast line. Two sets plus class 37 locos have been hired in by Northern Rail from Direct Rail Services. Primarily to increase passenger capacity in an effort to encourage workers at the Sellafield nuclear processing plant to leave their cars at home. Sadly (or unfortunately depending on your opinion) Northern have no spare DMUs to increase capacity and as a result have copied what some other train operators have done, i.e. utilise older locomotives and coaching stock.

During the first few weeks of operation, train sets are formed of two class 37s marshalled either end of a 4-coach Mark 2 set, one being a DBSO. Once certified, the intention will be to run the train with one loco in a push-pull formation.

Seen on the third day of the operation, 20 May 2015, 37409 heads train 2C47, 10:04 Preston to Barrow-in-Furness with 37419 trailing.

One working per day is extended to here, Preston with all other workings operating between Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle.
