Description |
English: Seal-top spoon Date: mid-late 16th century Description: Seal-top silver spoon, with pear-shaped bowl and plain hexagonal stem terminating in a fluted baluster with hexagonal top, the top badly worn as to appear circular. Unascribed maker's mark 'P' within a shaped shield stamped in bowl of spoon and on back of stem. For a similar unascribed mark, see: Jackson, C.J., 'English goldsmiths and their Marks', 2nd. rev.ed., New York, 1964. The bowl deeply pitted and scratched, the stem and top scratched and pitted. The spoon appears to have been cleaned recently. Length: 105 mm The precious metal content of the spoon fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %. |
