Title |
2007 T139+140 Leighfield Post Medieval silver coin hoard |
||
Description |
English: Post medieval silver coin hoard, 245 coins dating from Elizabeth I to James II.
report by Dr Barrie Cook, The coins correspond to the contents of other hoards of the Stuart Restoration, being predominantly of the older hammered coinage of Elizabeth and the early Stuarts, but with some new mechanically-made coins from the period 1662 onwards, this mostly consisting of higher denominations. a summary of the find is: Elizabeth I: 15 shillings and 43 sixpences James I: 31 shillings and 12 sixpences Charles I: 121 shillings and 5 sixpences Charles II, Hammered coinage: 3 crowns Charles II, Milled coinage: 1 crown, 7 halfcrowns and 3 shillings James II: 4 shillings The latest coin dates to 1686, and it might be tempting to associate the hoard with the turmoils of the period of the Glorious Revolution in1688-9, although this is not a necessary conclusion. However, it is certainly the case that the coins would represent a single deposit of material from the late 1680s. |
