Title
2008 T178 Medieval silver skimmer fragment (probably)
Description
English: 2008 T178 Incomplete medieval silver sheet with circular perforations. It is 34.93mm long, 12.84mm wide, 0.57mm thick. weight 0.52 grams.

British Museum Treasure Report For 2008/T178 Parish/County: East of Colchester, Essex

A fragment of thin metal sheet perforated with several irregular circular holes, some of which are incomplete. The curved edge indicates that it may originally have been circular or perhaps spoon-shaped.

Utensils with similar components are described as "Skimmers" or possible "Strainers" in Geoff Egan: The Medieval Household Daily Living c1150-c1450, Nos. 437-40, pp. 155-8.

This example is unusual in being silver, and is of much smaller dimensions. It may have formed part of a liturgical set used to strain the Eucharistic wine.

The fragment is silver and dates from the fourteenth or fifteenth century.

Dimensions: length 35 mm, maximum width 12 mm.
