English: TREASURE CASE 2009 T617: Post Medieval bell

Description: Damaged and incomplete Post Medieval silver bell. The upper hemisphere is decorated with a foliate design around the missing suspension loop. The lower hemisphere is missing. The bell is misshapen, with the copper alloy pea lodged inside.

In its current condition, it measures 15.76mm by 10.42mm,is 8.22mm deep and weighs 1.51 grams.

Discussion: Similar bells have been dated as 16th Century, see 2008 T576. They may have been utilized in hawking, falconry or on animal collars.

The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
