„ALPHA Österreich – mit Julius Kratky - Die freie Enzyklopädie – 10 Jahre Wikipedia“ Wikipedia ist ein 2001 gegründetes freies Online-Lexikon in zahlreichen Sprachen. Der Name setzt sich aus „Wiki“ (hawaiisch für „schnell“) und „Encyclopedia“, dem englischen Wort für Enzyklopädie, zusammen. Die deutsche Wikipedia umfasst über eine Million und die englische weit über drei Millionen Artikel. Das freie Online-Lexikon feiert am 15.Januar sein zehnjähriges Jubiläum. Aus diesem Anlass finden auf der ganzen Welt Veranstaltungen zum Jubiläum statt. alpha-Österreich verbindet sich via Internet mit Wikipedia-Gruppen in Österreich und Deutschland um die Macher hinter den Kulissen des Internetportals und ihre Philosophie kennenzulernen. Die Artikel werden von Autoren unentgeltlich geschrieben und nach der Veröffentlichung gemeinschaftlich korrigiert, erweitert und aktualisiert. Jeder Internetnutzer kann als Autor mitwirken. Wikipedia ist gegenwärtig das meist benutzte Online-Nachschlagewerk und rangiert auf Platz sieben der meistbesuchten Websites. Die englischsprachige Version ist die am häufigsten aufgerufene, gefolgt von der japanischen und der deutschsprachigen. Neben ihrer Funktion als Enzyklopädie spielt Wikipedia eine wachsende Rolle als Medium für die Verbreitung von aktuellen Nachrichten, zum Beispiel auch in Krisensituationen.
