English: The Hamburg war memorial (officially the monument for the fallen of both world wars) by the city hall with the original inscription from 1931 honoring the soldiers killed in the First World War: “Vierzigtausend Söhne der Stadt ließen ihr Leben für euch, 1914–1918” (forty thousand sons of this city lost their lives for you).
Deutsch: Das Hamburger Ehrenmal (Denkmal für die Gefallenen beider Weltkriege) mit der ursprünglichen Inschrift von 1931 für die Gefallenen des ersten Weltkriegs: „Vierzigtausend Söhne der Stadt ließen ihr Leben für euch, 1914–1918“. Das Denkmal für die Gefallenen beider Weltkriege, ist eine Stele am Fuß der bestehenden Viertelkreistreppe zur Kleinen Alster von Claus Hoffmann 1930-32 mit dem Relief Trauernde Mutter mit Kind 1931 von Ernst Barlach zur Erinnerung an die Gefallenen des Ersten Weltkriegs geschaffen. Rekonstruktion nach 1945 nach Entfernung 1938 durch den NS-Senat. Kleine Alster mit Treppenanlagen 1842 von Alexies de Chateauneuf, 1982 Erweiterung nach Norden; Treppenanlage mit Ehrenmal und Gitter 1929-31.
