Creek Street Historic District (US National Register Information System ID: 14000454) runs along a restored boardwalk supported by wooden pilings on the east bank Ketchikan Creek. In the gold rush days of the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was Ketchikan’s notorious red-light district. The salmon cannery near the mouth of Creek Street that founded the town of Ketchikan is gone but salmon still return to the creek spawn. The sign for “Creek Street Chum” at 21 Creek street refers to former days of prostitution and illegal alcohol. It is now an ordinary building in an area populated mostly by tourist shops and art galleries. “Perfect Partners” at 22 Creek Street, with a sign showing three hearts, is now a shop selling Alaskan gold and Australian opals. “Dolly’s House”, located at 24 Creek Street, was a noted house of prostitution in former days from the 1920s to 1950s. It is now a museum full of antiques, old photographs, and memorabilia from the life of Dolly Arthur, the madam and former owner of the house.
