2018T459 silver cufflink element
Description
English: Post medieval silver cufflink fragment. The object is circular in form with a loop attached to the centre of the underside. The object has decoration consisting of a raised heart shaped motif with crossed arrows behind and a flame emerging from its upper centre. This sits in a stippled field contained by a raised solid border, which has a rounded profile. Beyond the border the object has a slight projecting lip, 1.1mm wide. The date for this artefact is c. 1662-1700

Dimensions: Weight: 0.67g, diameter: 13.0mm, height inc. loop: 4.7mm, thickness of button: 0.3mm

Discussion: The use of cufflinks became popular in the latter half of the 17th century following changes to shirt styles. Several examples with this form and decoration have identified, and have been designated by Lewis (2013) as: Form 1, Type B.
