Title
2149 stirrup strap mount.jpg
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount length 43mm, width 28mm, thickness 9mm weight.19.14g. The mount is sub-triangular in form with a loop at the apex, this loop is truncated. The face is decorated with a moulded 'lion' facing to the left within a raised border. The creature looks upwards, with its foreleg raised, and tail curled between its hind legs and over its back. A rearward facing projection on the base of the piece has two rivet holes, both are encrusted wit iron corrosion. The artefact is corroded leaving a heavily pitted surface, the surface colour is a very dark green this may be the result of the artefact being coated in wax or most likely dipped in oil This is a Williams' Class A Type 11A stirrup strap mount of the 11th century (1997, 58ff.). Class A Type 11A stirrup-strap mounts are some of the most common found. Of those documented in Williams 1997 just over half face left, with the others facing right.
