Title
22. Iron Age Coin: gold stater of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes
Description
English: Contents of find

The find comprises of 42 Iron Age gold coins, all inscribed staters of Cunobelin of the Eastern British (North Thames) coin producing region (traditionally associated with the tribes referred to as the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes). All can be dated to the period AD 8-41 and are inscribed with the name of the ruler Cunobelin and the mint of Camulodunum (modern Colchester).

Six different coin types are represented within the 42 coins, with some variations within each type. Coins 11 and 20 are a variety of type 2774 with a x or + after the obverse inscription CVN. This has already been recorded by Allen 1975, 6 as a so-called 'privy mark' similar to the symbols occurring on the obverse of this type.

A full catalogue and images are appended below. The coins can be summarised as:

ABC 2798 ('Classic A type') 3

ABC 2774, ('Linear type') 19

ABC 2786 ('Plastic type') 5

ABC 2792 ('Plastic no branch type') 1

ABC 2783 ('Wild series B / Ring type') 8
