Title
2597 Lead alloy Possible talisman.jpg
Description
English: Lead alloy Possible talisman length 17mm, width 13mm, thickness 4mm, weight 4.61g. Teardrop-shape, with a knop on terminal at the top edge. The surfaces has a series of incised diagonal lines that radiate out from the centre. The reverse is undecorated. Although the crude nature of the casting and decoration makes this artefact difficult to identify, it seams apparent that it is supposed to represent a scallop shell. Such badges were used in the Late Medieval and Early Post-Medieval Period and used as symbols of pilgrimage. This could be a crude homemade example, as no attachment loop is visible it may have been used as a hand held charm or talisman.
