December 11, 1926. SUBJECT: Erection of monument to North Carolina soldiers in Gettysburg National Military Park. TO: Superintendent Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg, Pa. 1. The State of North Carolina contemplates the erection of a monument to its soldiers who took part in the battle of Gettysburg. In this connection it is desired to ascertain what about the cost has been of state monuments erected in the last ten or fifteen years. You will furnish this data so far as you are able from your records, with the least practicable delay. 2. You will also prepare and send to this office, a map of the battle field showing a suitable site for such a monument, conformable to the history of the battle, and the general plan for marking battle lines. By order of the Quartermaster General: F. H. Pope, Colonel, Q. M. C., Assistant. 1st Ind. War Department QMC. Gettysburg Nat. Mil. Park, Gettysburg, Pa. December 14, 1926. – To the Quartermaster General, U. S. A. 1. In compliance with your request in paragraph 1 the following data is in reference to State monuments erected on the battlefield of Gettysburg since the year 1893: Pennsylvania Memorial erected in 1910, cost $150,000. New York State Monument erected in 1893, cost $59,095.30. Virginia State Memorial erected in 1917, cost $50,000. 2. Reply to paragraph #2 is given on separate inclosure. Respectfully submitted. Acting Superintendent James B. Aumen.
