Title
303 roman bird base.JPG
Description
English: Figurine
Roman
37mm long, 10mm wide, 22mm thick

Figurine of a bird, (probably an eagle). The bird is sitting perched on the end of a rectangular lug, the wings are folded back and are plain with the exception of a series of notches the have been cut in the sides to give the representation of feathers. The head is plain and any detail for facial feature has worn away, the beak is slightly hooked. There are no further details for the plumage and the tail is merged in with the wings. All in all, the decoration and design of this piece is very simple. The rectangular lug (11mmlong, 9.5mm, wide, 2.5mm thick) is plain and narrows towards the terminal, this may have been slotted into the side of something and it is likely that this is a decorative mount.

Patches of a mid green patina remain, the object look as if it has been extensively cleaned buy the finder and coated in something resulting in a glossy finish.
