Description
English: 330-PS-92371-1: Navy Crewmen Dig Out Aircraft at Little America Station, Antarctica, 1 August 1958. As most of the nation prepares for winter, U.S. Navy personnel in the Antarctic look forward to summer. Above, two crewmen at Kiel Field, Little America Station, pause for rest while digging out a Navy Douglas Transport plane in preparation for summer operations. During the winter months, from June to September, complete darkness settles over the continent and temperatures drop to unbelievable lows. The low temperature at Little America Station was minus 72.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Approximately, 100 Navy and civilian personnel, including 24 International Geophysical Year scientists made up the “Wintering-Over” party at Little America. (10/28/2014).
