Description
English: 330-PS-9583 (428-GX-USN 710480) First U.S. Nuclear Surface Ship To Be Launched By Navy. The guided missile cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN 9), the United States’ first nuclear-powered surface ship, will be launched on 14 July 1959 in Quincy, Massachusetts, by the Bethlehem Steel Company, Shipbuilding Division. Armament on board the cruiser will include the Talos and Terrier Missiles. Powered by twin nuclear reactors, the Long Beach is 721 feet in length, 73 feet in beam, and has 14,000 ton displacement.
