Title
3947 Rolled glass bead.jpg
Description
English:

Rolled glass bead thickness 9mm, external diameter 18mm, internal diameter 8mm, weight 2.89g. Clear green glass bead, this in circular in plan with a sub-oval cross-section. There are bubbles throughout the glass.

Birgitta Hoffmann (pers. comm.) identifies this bead as Guido's type 6iia (see Guido 1978). According to Hoffmann, beads of this form occur throughout the Roman period and are also known in pre-Roman, Iron Age contexts such as the cemetery at King Harry Lane, St. Albans (Stead and Rigby 1989); they are, however, most common on sites of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, both military and civilian. It is suggested that such beads were probably made from recycled bottle glass. It is uncertain as to whether they were all intended for personal ornamentation and they may also have served as horse harness decorations.
