Title |
3; 17th century medallion reused as a toy |
||
Description |
English: A lead alloy medallion, probably 17th century in date, which has been converted at a later date into a child’s ‘buzz-wheel’ toy. The original medallion is possibly of Louis XIV and may be described as follows:
Obverse: A forward facing, draped bust of a male figure, possibly wearing a short periwig. (…..)ERICUS(….)X Reverse: A mounted horseman, riding left, possibly giving orders using a baton to indicate a distant city. There may originally have been an exergue, but this has been damaged by later modifications and is no longer legible. (….) DUX [E]T MILES (….) The reverse legend is probably part of REX DUX ET MILES meaning King, Duke and Soldier, found on some 17th century medals. The medal has been modified by cutting the edge into zig-zags and piercing two holes in the centre to make a Buzz disc similar to SUSS-764C33. A number of these toys are illustrated in Egan and Forsyth: Toys Trifles and Trinkets pages 387-391. The dating of these toys is uncertain but Egan and Forsyth suggest a 17th – 18th century date, one of these toys has come from an archaeological context dated 1675-1700. The buzz disc is 36.1mm in diameter and 2.2mm thick. It weighs 13gm. |
