Title |
4: medieval ceramic vessel shard |
||
Description |
English: A medieval wall fragment from a ceramic vessel. The sherd is 61.6mm long, 47.4mm wide and 9mm thick. It weighs 33.9g. The sherd has pronounced ridges, presumably finger marks. The fabric is light grey on the outer surface with a purple core with wavy lines of cream in the wall (poorly mixed clay?) and a dark red inner surface. It has sparse light coloured slightly rounded glassy inclusions (quartzite?) with good sorting, occasional white, softer pieces (shell or limestone?) and very occasional large dark angular hard pieces (rock or hard grog?) which form blisters on the surface. It is hard and the texture is fine with some lamination. This is probably part of a medieval pot in the Northern gritty ware tradition and is similar to Doncaster wares. |
