Title
631 Knife view b.jpg
Description
English: Whittle tanged iron knife, surviving length 78mm, width 25mm thickness 5mm. Remains of the rectangular sectioned tang at one end, 26mm long, 12mm wide, thickness 5mm. From the tang the blade expands, the lower edge more steeply angled than the upper. The back is almost straight but angles slightly downwards, the cutting edge rises upwards at an angle to meet at the point. The end of the blade is missing and is only 50mm long, but judging by the angle of the blade, it may have been approximately 110mm long.
Because the knife is so corroded it is difficult to give an exact date but this style of knife has be found in excavations in Jorvic and London and a 9th-14th century date is possible.
