Summary[edit]

Description This forlorn, mutilated Italianate-style mixed-use building stands abandoned at the corner of 8th Street and Depot Street along a stretch of 8th Street that was once home to many apartments and shops, which have almost entirely been demolished, leaving the area devoid of a sense of place, and as just a corridor to funnel as many cars through as possible. Constructed in the 19th Century, this building took advantage of its location on a streetcar line and near the bottom of the Price Hill Incline, both of which were removed in the mid-20th Century urban planning blunder. The buildings next to this one, a series of residential Duplexes and storefronts, were cleared for a parking lot in the early 1970s, along with many buildings once located across the street, due to the area being targeted for redevelopment from a mixed-use neighborhood into an industrial area, which was, fortunately, not fully implemented. Today, the block next to this building is home to an out-of-scale health clinic, which fronts the street with an ugly postmodern-style wall that screens a suburban-style parking lot, as well as a single remaining one-story storefront and a vacant lot at the corner with State Avenue. This building needs to be preserved, as it has a lot of charm and good craftsmanship, and, despite the loss of the cornice and original roof in the front, still retains much of its historic character. It is one of a handful of historic buildings that remain in what was once a vibrant housing and business district, and it does appear to be stabilized and secured properly. It will be a vital piece of any future redevelopment in this part of Lower Price Hill, and holds a ton of potential within its old brick walls.
