Title
913 Roman folding knife fragmant view 2.jpg
Description
English: Cast copper alloy knife handle fragment, length 20mm, width 12mm, thickness 4mm, weight 2.92g. This is a handle to an openwork folding knife with a design depicting a hound chasing a hare. Only the hare fragment remains, the hound behind has corroded away. The hare is depicted with large triangular ears and standing on a fragment of earth, there is a slot in the underside of the handle, where that blade would fit. All of the breaks are very worn and corroded with light green powder on the surface, that rest of the surface has a mid green pitted patina This form of folding knife is relatively common a theme of roman material culture, particularly in the 4th century. There is a published example in Richborough 4 (Bushe-Fox 1949, plate XXXVI no. 118).
