Summary[edit]

Description

Self-calibrating AFM probe: Light travels down the optical fiber on the left, striking the top edge of the gold-plated segment lodged in the sensor's tip. The light pressure sets the sensor vibrating. The long fiber on the right connects to an interferometer (not shown), which measures the tip's movement, giving a value for the probe's stiffness. The sensor is attached to the wall at left in two places; darker sections of the image are empty space.
