Title
AMPULLA
Description
English:

An incomplete, medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla, dating to c. AD 1350-1530. The flask-shaped ampulla has a rounded bowl that tapers where it meets the neck. The neck of the ampulla is incomplete but appears to have flared. Both faces of the bowl are decorated in relief, the obverse with a simplified shell design, the reverse depicting a cross on a step or pedastal.

Dimensions: length 22.95mm; width 14.97mm (bowl); 6.21mm thick; 49.35g in weight.

Although in use from the late 12th century, the majority of the robust ampulla to survive in England are those of the later Medieval period, probably dating to c. AD 1350-1530 (Spencer 1990: 58). Ampulla were designed to contain a draught of relic water, to be taken as cures or worn by suspension through the loops as a talisman (Spencer 1998: 203), whilst Anderson (2010) has suggested that their distribution suggests diliberate deposition on agricultural land. A preliminary search has not identified any further ampullae with this style of cross.
