Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Color image from lunar orbit. Interior of Langrenus crater with central peak. North toward upper left.
This photo was used in Figure 18-16 of the Apollo 14 Preliminary Science Report (SP-272), which has the following caption:
Central peak of Langrenus crater, viewed from the southwest. The curved ridge in the northern part of the peak assemblage measures approximately 13 km in an east-west direction; points 1 to 4 refer to stratification seen on the ridge face as described in text. (North is toward upper left).

The text of the Report refers to the figure as follows:

Color photograph AS14-73-10145 shows inclined layering within the central peak of Langrenus Crater similar to that recognized previously in the famous Lunar Orbiter 2 oblique photograph of Copernicus Crater (ref. 18-5). The Apollo 14 photograph (fig. 18-16) is superior in detail (taken from an opposite viewpoint, the southwest) to the Apollo 10 photographs of Langrenus Crater. The face of a steep-walled ridge in the northern part of the central peak complex shows, from top to bottom, the following discrete units:
(1) A highly reflective but somewhat streaked uppermost layer with a diffuse lower boundary
(2) A dark, relatively thin, discontinuous unit
(3) Dark and light patches of possibly mixed materials slumped from overlying units. (The dark spots on the hill in the foreground may represent the equivalents of the dark rocks seen on the ridge face.)
(4) Main part of hill (massive, light gray, and vertically streaked in the middle part of the slope (probably talus)
A light mottled bank at the base of the ridge (and at the base of the hill in foreground) may be accumulations of boulders.
