English: The Disaster of the Pontoon Bridge (Ponte das Barcas) at Porto, Portugal.
In the foreground, the City of Porto, dressed in rags and with shackles on her hands, refuses the flag that France tries to make her hold instead of the City's arms and those of the Kingdom. Douro River, to the right, hides its face, horrified at the corpse-filled embankment. In the background, the Ponte das Barcas, a floating bridge, collapses under the weight of the crowds of civilians trying to escape the invading French army. On the sky, the star sign (a ram - Aries) and the date (29 March 1809), give the date of the catastrophe.
