Title
A Medieval copper alloy harness pendant bell (14th century).
Description
English: A Medieval copper alloy harness pendant bell (14th century). The bell is hollow and conical with a loop for suspension at the peak. The bell has been constructed from a sheet of copper alloy rolled to form the conical shape, the ends are cut and folded to form four petals at the rounded end. At the base of each of the ‘petals’ is a spherical hole. One of the ‘petals’ and the internal pea is missing. The outer surface is decorated with three bands of double incised transverse lines regularly spaced along the length of the bell. There is a large amount of gilding remaining on the external surface.

Nick Griffiths (1986:2 no 20) illustrates a complex harness pendant which includes a central mount with two curving arms from which two shield-shaped pendants are suspended. From the base of the central mount there is a horizontal iron bar from which two conical bells are suspended. The two conical bells are identical to this example.

Dimensions: Diameter at base: 10.21mm; length: 35.27mm; weight: 4.51g.
