Title |
A Medieval iron knife handle dating to the 15th century. |

Description |
English: A Medieval iron knife handle dating to the 15th century. The object is formed by encasing the blade, broken close to the handle, in two sheets of iron to form the handle. The rest of the blade is no longer present. There would have been an organic material around the handle to act as a grip but it has not survived. The grip would have been secured to the handle by a series of three rivets, which are still in situ, on either side of the handle. There is a collar where the blade meets the handle, formed of a raised rectangular panel and a lip extending over the blade on one side. The collar is decorated with a moulded linear border along one edge. The suspension loop is circular and forms part of both the blade and the handle sections. It has been broken so that only two thirds of the loop remains. The object appears to be otherwise undecorated, but there is a deal of light grey and orange corrosion product across the entire surface.
A similar example can be found in Brown (2001, 67, fig 20b) though it has a copper alloy collar and different rivet formation. This example was dated c. AD 1400, with this example likely to be of a similar date. Dimensions: length: 97.27 mm; width: 17.69 mm; thickness: 9.98 mm; internal suspension loop diameter: 13.20 mm; weight: 29.90g.
